To continue my series of posts about Daily Thread (my 2019 daily stitch journal), here’s the second piece, which had the theme of "snow." I worked on it from January 21 through February 15, 2019 — Days 21 through 42 of the project.
February can be grim and endless in New England. I chose to counteract the gloom with a piece that was more lighthearted.
It was a snowy time, so most days I used white or off-white as the daily color (you can see the stitch log recording each day’s color in the third photo below). The piece began with simple running stitch over which I stitched various circles. To me circles, have a joyful, happy feeling, which is usually how I feel when watching snow fall. I’m not a big fan of winter’s cold temperatures and the ugly phenomenon known as “wintry mix” here in New England. But the stillness and serenity of my yard when covered with snow is always a joyful sight.
Towards the end of my time stitching this piece, the snow began melting away, but a long swath of grey ice remained across the yard (see photo below). I used grey satin stitch to commemorate the ice. As you can see if you compare the progress photos to the finished piece, I turn these abstract embroideries around quite often as I work on them. Sometimes the orientation is fixed right from the beginning, but not always.
If you’re curious, the purple marks are from a disappearing ink pen. They gradually fade away.
My next post will take a look at Daily Thread: Piece No. 3, which had the theme of "bark and bramble."
